Can you play with random people online and if so, how's the general experience in doing so?

I just got the game and I love it, but minigolf feels kind of lonely by yourself and I don't have any friends with a Quest. I'm usually hesitant to play games online these days because I've had too many negative experiences with online gaming over the last 30 years.
